Abstract:
Long-lasting, supportive relationships (also called “enduring relationships”) are important for youths’ transition to adulthood, but these relationships are often ruptured for young people in foster care. The authors investigate how common enduring relationships are among youth making the transition out of care and whether having an enduring relationship improves their outcomes in early adulthood. The study's sample includes 608 youths in California foster care participating in the longitudinal CalYOUTH Study.
The authors found that 48 percent of youth have an enduring…

This article focuses on some of the care leavers networks in South Asia. It was published in the September 2022 issue of Institutionalised Children Explorations and Beyond.
Institutionalised Children Explorations and Beyond (ICB) is a bi-annual international academic journal, launched on 14 March 2014, to discuss the state of care of children in alternative forms of care. The journal’s regional focus is on the eight South Asian countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
This U.K.-based study explored the life experiences of care experienced adults in higher education to understand the factors that impeded or enhanced their journeys. Care experienced refers to someone who has been in the care of the state at some point in their life.
Six students with a history in the care system took part in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis identified global themes of self-reliance, resilience, intrinsic motivation and optimism which derived from underlying experiences of support, attachment, trust, expectations and placement experiences.
Findings suggest…

Background
Mentoring, specifically peer mentoring, emerged in the child welfare setting in the early 2000s. Peer parent programs provide child welfare involved families a unique opportunity to connect with parents that have successfully navigated the child welfare system and who share similar lived experiences. Care leaver transitions from care have attracted a great deal of scholarly attention in the Global North. More recently, scholars from the Global South have begun documenting care leavers’ experiences, and the evidence suggests their outcomes are largely negative. In Zimbabwe, institutionalisation is still a common form of child welfare for young people without family care, yet a handful of studies exist on the institutional care experiences.
This paper presents findings from a study on care leavers’ (n = 15) experiences of transitional housing at three institutions in Zimbabwe. Using the…
