How do young people transitioning from care plan their future lives? Planning is usually thought of as requiring clear goals and ‘future orientation’, but how might planning be regarded by young people whose wishes, hopes and plans have been repeatedly dashed? In this book Peter Appleton builds on research interviews with care-experienced young adults, and on cross-disciplinary theories of planning and of emotions, to develop a creative and non-dogmatic three-aspects model of planning for young people leaving care.
A valuable resource for practitioners, researchers and educators, this book…
The enactment of the National Standard of Care for Child Welfare Institutions in 2011 signifies Indonesia's commitment to deinstitutionalization by guiding the transformation of the country’s Child Welfare Institutions, from facility-based childcare homes or orphanages, to centers of community-based children and family services. Yet, evidence of this transformation of Child Welfare Institutions is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the state of transformation of the child welfare service providers for neglected children in the City of Bandung as a parameter to understand the progress of…
There are several studies that provide evidence for the negative effects of residential care for children. This chapter applies system analysis and child-centric approaches to assess the Children Alternative Care System (CACS) deinstitutionalization in Egypt.

The study conducted systematic review for literature on alternative care for children, used participant’s observation and applied…
The transition of individual residential care services for children is a critical part of child protection and care systems reform. It is one of several critical measures required of governments to implement commitments made at the international level to phase out the institutionalization of children and reorientate the system towards family-based care.1 To support the scaling up of transitioning residential care services, and to ensure it is done in a manner that is safe, effective and puts children’s best interests first, certain factors need to be in place at the system level to create…

Statistically, in 2007, there were…

The authors investigate how common enduring relationships are among youth making the transition out of care and whether having an enduring relationship improves their outcomes in early adulthood. The study's sample includes 608 youths in California foster care participating in the longitudinal CalYOUTH Study.
The authors found that 48 percent of youth have an enduring…

Global evidence shows that family strengthening programs increase parent and caregiver knowledge, self-confidence, and competencies around parenting, resulting in improvements for children and families. Positive parenting programs are an important part of this package and are provided together with training in household…
