This document compares three versions of the same home visiting model, aimed at improving parent-child interactions and child development: the well-known Jamaica model, which was gradually scaled up from an efficacy trial (‘proof of concept’) in Jamaica, to a pilot in Colombia, to an at-scale program in Peru. It first describes the design, implementation and impacts of these three programs. Then, it analyzes the threats to scalability in each of these experiences and discusses how they could have affected program outcomes, with a focus on three of the elements of the economic model…
We agree on the need to integrate intimate partner violence (IPV) and violence against children (VAC) prevention efforts. But what does this integration look like in practice?
In this webinar, prevention experts discuss the process, experiences, and challenges of the ongoing integration of IPV prevention and gender into the Investing in Children and their Societies (ICS) Skilful Parenting Programme, and inclusion of VAC in the Indashyikirwa couples IPV prevention programme.
The High-Level Session on ‘Advancing the Early Childhood Agenda: High Level Session towards a Global Partnership Strategy’, organized by UNESCO, took place on 28 January 2021 under the leadership of the UNESCO Assistant Director General for Education and Her Royal Highness Princess Laurentien. It was organized as a follow up to the technical Session held on 16 December 2020, which aimed to stimulate discussion and collect experts’ inputs on key enabling factors to advance the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)/Early Childhood Development (ECD) agenda for the preparation of the…
Abstract
Early help or early intervention is increasingly recommended for safeguarding children living with domestic violence, but little is known about what is effective. This article discusses findings from an evaluation of a pioneering early help service in North West England. This new service aimed to improve the safety and wellbeing of families (mothers and children) who were assessed as below the level of ‘high risk’ domestic violence and below the threshold for a child protection order. Between January 2014 and March 2015, families (473 mothers and 541 children) were identified…
Abstract
Background
Child abuse and neglect is a public health concern around the world, with well-established impacts and costs to children, families, and society. While mandated reporters make the majority of reports, child abuse is still under-reported and many mandated reporters fail to report known and suspected cases.
Objective
This study was designed to evaluate the content of US state-sponsored online mandated reporter training in order to identify gaps and need for improvement in mandated reporter training.
Methods
A deductive qualitative content analysis of the…
Abstract
Children and young people living in residential care are vulnerable to sexual abuse, and there is scant evidence about what sexuality education could help address this vulnerability. This paper explores the impact of the Power to Kids: Respecting Sexual Safety programme, which involved capacity‐building workers to have ‘brave conversations’ with children and young people in residential care. The aim of the study was to capture the perceptions of workers about changes in their skill and confidence levels in relation to having brave conversations with children and…

Background
Caregivers' parenting knowledge is of importance to child development and to achieve positive child outcomes. Even though some caregiver education programs have demonstrated positive effects, most of them are carried out in developed countries and among western samples. As a developing country with the second‐largest child population worldwide, China has initiated caregiver education programs to promote parenting knowledge among caregivers since 2016. This study examines the effect of an innovative caregiver education program on caregivers' perceived increase of…
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of an intervention created to stimulate the development of children under the age of seven, living in an institution for children without parental care in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of the intervention was to match each child with one volunteer, trained to deliver three hours per week of individually tailored, play-based activities, for a minimum of one year.
16 children (6 boys) participated in the intervention. Three children dropped out after one month of the intervention due to their placement in foster families, so…
Abstract
Background
Child abuse organizations are keenly aware of the impact helping abused and neglected children has on the people who do that work. In their efforts to address this issue, they look to their colleagues for recommendations on what works. Of particular value is testimony from those who have used evidence-informed programs to mitigate the impact on staff, so services to children do not suffer.

Abstract
Background
Funding for prevention interventions is often quite limited. Cost-related assessments are important to best allocate prevention funds.
Objectives
To determine the (1) overall cost for implementing the Safe Environment for Every Kid (SEEK) model, (2) cost of implementation per child, and (3) cost per case of maltreatment averted.
Design
Cost-effective analysis of a randomized controlled trial.
Participants and setting
102 pediatric providers at 18 pediatric primary care practices. 924 families with children < 6 years receiving care by those…
