Early childhood is deeply influential in a child’s life trajectory. Children need nurturing care to enable them to develop to their full potential. Evidence demonstrates the critical role of parents and the importance of play in holistic child development making playful parenting an important component in children’s early years development. When development is delayed, or at risk, interventions, including those that incorporate play and communication between the primary caregiver and the child are critical. But how well are caregivers equipped to better identify risks and support their…
Life-saving services such as safe childbirth, immunisation, and nutritional rehabilitation ensure children in conflict settings survive. But surviving is not enough. If we want children to thrive in all aspects of their life, they not only need good health and nutrition, they also need to feel safe and secure, have opportunities to play, and be cared for responsibly. We call this nurturing care. Health care practitioners have a pivotal role to play. Find out how in this video.
The period of early development from conception until children reach age eight (8) are the most important in terms of unlocking full potentials – and as such – for securing sustainable development. It is for this reason that access to comprehensive, quality Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes and services is recognised as both a fundamental right in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC is the overarching normative and legal framework for ECD and the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world. In Africa, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare…

In this new series by UNICEF, Laura Mucha – author, poet and children’s advocate – interviews some of the world’s leading experts to find out why love is so important in childhood.
The series sets out to cover how adversity impacts us as children and the adults we become, what we can do to protect and improve young people’s mental health, and why safe and loving relationships are so vital for children’s health, development and wellbeing throughout life.
In this first event of Family for Every Child's How We Care series, Family Members CINDI (South Africa), Conacmi (Guatemala) and Uyisenga Ni Imanzi (Rwanda) shared their approaches and experiences of providing psychosocial support to children and families during the COVID-19 crisis. Their presentations were followed by a panel discussion and Q&A, complementing the How We Care materials being produced on this theme. Juliana Trujillo from Juconi (Mexico) moderated this…
Early Childhood is a period where the foundation of a child’s life trajectory is set. When development is delayed or is at-risk of being delayed, interventions (including play-based approaches) during the early years that promote holistic development can reverse or mitigate long term impact of developmental delays.
Parents and caregivers of young children need support so they can be best equipped to help their children at home and find the right outside services.

Through interviews with cutting edge researchers, scientists, economists, families and educators, this film explores the so called “miracle years”, a critical period of our lives that no one remembers, in a profound new way – emphasizing how the first few years are the greatest opportunity we have to give children the best start in life.
The film reveals that learning begins way before children go to school and that it’s the experiences children are exposed to that determine their chances for future success. Everyday situations such as play, relationships, language and nutrition are…
