ABSTRACT
This synthesis report, ‘Families, Family Policy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Key Findings’ explores how the role of families, and family policies from around the world, can contribute to meeting the SDG targets. Given the key role families and family policies play in determining social progress, and in view of the national and international focus on meeting the SDGs by 2030, the timing of this publication is opportune. The report summarizes evidence across the six SDGs that cover poverty, health, education, gender equality, youth unemployment, and ending violence…
Save the Children South Africa commissioned a mapping of the children’s sector in South Africa as of June 2014 to provide an information platform to inform its strategic reflection and planning process. The brief for the mapping exercise, the results of which are documented in this paper, was to work within Save the Children’s global strategic framework of priority rights and breakthrough outcomes to identify:
- Catalytic issues impacting on children’s constitutional rights to health and nutrition, education, protection and child rights governance;
- Who the various…
South Africa is a young nation, one in which more than 18 million children comprise roughly 37 percent of the population. For about 70 percent of them, however, the future is bleak. They live in the poorest households and are exposed to inhumane violence and abuse. They have limited access to quality education, especially early childhood education (ECD). They also lack care and support from parents and other adults, and reside in areas where assistance for children with disabilities is virtually non-existent.
Save the Children South Africa will be the champion for these children by…
Refugee women and children face specific risks and their needs are, quite rightly, highlighted and addressed by the humanitarian community. However, the situation and specific needs of single male refugees is often less understood. This report aims to address this information gap. With a focus on the situation in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and Greece, it aims to provide a better understanding of the gendered impact of the refugee crisis on unaccompanied adolescent boys, aged 13 to 17, and men, single or living separately from their families; and to highlight actual and potential gaps in the…

This report from Disability Rights International documents the human rights violations, exploitation, and trafficking of children with and without disabilities in Guatemala. Guatemala has failed to create the protections and support needed to help children live with a family – especially children with disabilities. DRI is also concerned that private charities and international donors are supporting orphanages and perpetuating discrimination. International support – including “voluntourism” – leaves children open to segregation, abuse, and further exploitation by traffickers.
A year after…

This study explores both sexual abuse experienced by boys, including sexual exploitation, as well as harmful sexual behaviour of boys; referred to collectively as sexual violence.
The scoping study indicates that socio-cultural norms related to childhood, gender, masculinity and…
