Children who experience deprivation of liberty are distinguished by a high prevalence of complex, co-occurring health needs that necessitate coordinated, high-quality healthcare. Emerging evidence of very poor health outcomes after deprivation of liberty suggests that in addition to ongoing efforts to prevent detention, more should be done to improve the health of these children, both in detention and after they return to the community. Setting and implementing minimum standards for healthcare in detention can help to drive improvements in the quality of care, and thereby improve health…
The transition of individual residential care services for children is a critical part of child protection and care systems reform. It is one of several critical measures required of governments to implement commitments made at the international level to phase out the institutionalization of children and reorientate the system towards family-based care.1 To support the scaling up of transitioning residential care services, and to ensure it is done in a manner that is safe, effective and puts children’s best interests first, certain factors need to be in place at the system level to create…
This study explored the experiences of children and young people in the community-based support model of the Mockingbird Family, in South Australia, during implementation and roll-out. The study involved semi-structured interviews with a diverse group of 54 participants, including 21 children and young people, 12 foster carers, and 14 agency workers. With rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, increasing biodiversity loss, and prolonged droughts, climate change is already affecting ecosystems in the Eastern and Southern Africa region and the communities that depend on them. For example, recent droughts in the Horn of Africa are widely attributed to climate change, with such extreme weather events likely to become more common as global temperatures rise. Many areas of Kenya have experienced unprecedented drought, with five consecutive below-average rains.

If you’ve watched The Love You Give, you’ll recognise Peter Kamau and his gorgeous son Jedd, who featured in this docustory about orphanages.

The experience had such a profound effect on him that he co-founded Child In Family Focus, an organisation which champions family based care for orphaned and vulnerable children. Even though Kenya now has a moratorium on the registration of new residential care institutions, the country remains one of the most popular destinations…
