Abstract
Background
Funding for prevention interventions is often quite limited. Cost-related assessments are important to best allocate prevention funds.
Objectives

This report is the result of an investigation into the amount of official development assistance (ODA) that is targeted at ending violence against children, either as the main focus or as part of a broader programme. As starting points, this study took the definition of violence against children as laid out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the United Nations Study on Violence against Children and in the Global Partnership Strategy, and the strategies for ending violence against children described in the INSPIRE package.

This paper presents new estimates of the average lifetime cost per child maltreatment (CM) victim in the United States and aggregate lifetime costs for all new cases of CM incurred in 2008 using an incidence-based approach. This study extends previous research in this area by correcting methodological flaws of previous studies; incorporating more recent and comprehensive studies of the epidemiology, consequences, and costs of CM; and providing a framework for using the findings in the literature to estimate the incidence-based economic burden of CM.…
