When parents pass away, grandparents often assume the role of caregivers. Being thrust back into parenthood during a time of immense grief, and with a two-generation gap to bridge, introduces a range of challenges grandparents must overcome.
This video look at the learning of practitioners from Upendo Village in Kenya in supporting grandparents caring for grandchildren after their own children have passed away from HIV/AIDs.
Sister Florence and Bridget share some of the most common challenges these grandparents face and why peer support is so crucial to enabling grandparents…
This study was conducted in partnership with frontline, human rights defenders, survivor-led organisations/networks and social justice centres using a prospective study design, which enabled the systematic and rapid study of sexual violence in Kenya during the pandemic, even though there were considerable physical distancing measures in place.
The data provide detailed information about survivors and perpetrators, including where and when incidents occurred, which enabled us to compare patterns of sexual violence in adults and children.
The sample comprised individuals who were seeking…
Governments around the world responded to the spread of COVID-19 by imposing lockdowns, quarantines and school closures. While these measures have contained the spread of the virus, they have also increased the risk factors for intimate partner violence and child abuse, leading to what the UN has described as “the shadow pandemic of domestic violence”.
Family for Every Child alliance members have been in close contact with children, families and communities during the pandemic. They have seen that domestic violence is being inflicted on children either directly in the form of child abuse,…
The assessment of COVID-19 effect on the Wellbeing of Children in Uganda was conducted between June and August, 2020 by AfriChild Centre, Makerere University. The study took a retrospective approach with a focus on the three months of the COVID-19 lock down (AprilJune 2020) to counter contradictions that could arise from a longer study period in the face of changing dynamics of COVID-19.
To generate evidence, a cross-sectional survey design utilizing quantitative and qualitative approaches of data collection was used. A total of 644 children aged 10-17 distributed across four districts of…
Abstract
Background
COVID-19 has become a worldwide pandemic impacting child protection services (CPSs) in many countries. With quarantine and social distancing restrictions, school closures, and recreational venues suspended or providing reduced access, the social safety net for violence prevention has been disrupted significantly. Impacts include the concerns of underreporting and increased risk of child abuse and neglect, as well as challenges in operating CPSs and keeping their workforce safe.
Objective
The current discussion paper explored the impact of COVID-19 on child…
The special issue “Protecting children from maltreatment during COVID-19: First volume,” focused on analyzing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on various aspects of child maltreatment and child protective services. This second volume is a continuation of the first and comprises studies intended to address two core questions: (1) how does COVID-19 impact the rates of child maltreatment (CM); and (2) how does COVID-19 impact the delivery of child protective service responses. These two questions are discussed and studied in a variety of international settings.
