This webinar was hosted by the Evidence for Impact Working Group of the Transforming Children’s Care Collaborative on March 30, 2023, and examined the Early Institutionalization Intervention Impact Project in Brazil.
The Early Institutionalization Intervention Impact Project's (EI-3) main goal is to document and compare the impacts that enhanced institutional care and enhanced foster care have on development during early childhood.
The EI-3 research project builds upon the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP). Conducted in…
A child’s care status impacts his or her health, developmental outcomes and general well-being, both during childhood and later in life. Children outside of a family setting are more likely than their family-based peers to experience abuse, neglect, exploitation, lack of stimulation, poor nutrition and toxic stress, with lifelong physical and psychological repercussions. Moreover, children living in institutional settings are frequently missing from official statistics since reporting for many indicators, particularly those that comprise global monitoring frameworks such as the Sustainable…
The COVID-19 Global Gender Response Tracker monitors responses taken by governments worldwide to tackle the pandemic, and highlights those that have integrated a gender lens. It captures two types of government responses: women’s participation in COVID-19 task forces and national policy measures taken by governments. It analyzes which of the policy measures address women’s economic and social security, including unpaid care work, the labour market and violence against women. The Tracker can provide guidance for policymakers and evidence for advocates to ensure a gender-sensitive COVID-19…
In April 2019, the Better Care Network, on behalf of ReThink Orphanages USA, commissioned the U.S.-based policy consultancy, ChildFocus, to begin documenting the ways in which the United States supports and perpetuates overseas orphanages. The following report lays out the results of this preliminary mapping exercise based on: an analysis of existing data; a literature review of U.S government publications and investments; a review of non-profit organizations and foundation activities; an analysis of key supply chains and stakeholders; and the identification of existing data gaps. The…
This assessment complements the UNHCR-led interagency assessment that focused on Gender-based violence (GBV) and violence against children (VAC) in 11 refugee settlements (UNHCR and OPM 2019). The Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project (DRDIP) analysis includes a comprehensive mapping of services for GBV and VAC prevention and response across the key sectors of health, police, justice, and social services in refugee settlements and host communities. In addition, qualitative data were collected through focus group discussions with refugees and local populations; interviews with…
Through the programme “Integrating Child Protection within the African Peace and Security Architecture”, Save the Children sought to institute and monitor a functional accountability framework on child protection within the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities and Mechanisms as well as troop-contributing countries. In keeping with this objective, the first phase of the project mapped the relevant means of holding actors accountable for violations committed against children by assessing the child protection-relevant accountability mechanisms in situations of armed conflict. The…
The purpose of the assessment was to review service delivery in centres for children with disabilities in Rwanda. The assessment generated evidence essential for advocacy, policy and programme development both for children in institutional care and children with disabilities living in their communities. Data were collected and analyzed for 49 of the 59 institutions listed by NCPD. After analysis, information was grouped in two parts: i) factual data about the institution regarding services offered and funding and ii) an appreciation of how services are provided to children enrolled at each…
Abstract
Background: Violence against children (VAC) is a widespread, global issue with far-reaching social and economic consequences. In recent years, VAC has received substantial international attention, resulting in government initiatives to reduce VAC, in part, by strengthening data collection and information systems.
Objective: This scoping review was undertaken to map survey methodologies for VAC measurement in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries and to identify key considerations for developing both…
This research study was commissioned to generate a better understanding of three school communities in Cambodia: Islamic schools, Buddhist monastic schools, and floating schools with a focus on identifying challenges in delivering quality and inclusive education.
There has been significant progress in Cambodia’s education system. Student enrolment in the public-school system has increased rapidly across all education levels. In recent years, primary education enrolments have reached near gender parity. These improvements are in large part a result of strong commitment from the Royal…
