Modern slavery and tourism: when holidays and human exploitation collide

Joseph M. Cheer, Kent Goldsworthy, Leigh Mathews, & Shivani Kanodia - The Conversation

In this article, Leigh Mathews of ReThink Orphanages and others describe how orphanage tourism is linked to the exploitation of children and modern slavery, citing the growth in orphanage tourism as an example of how children in institutions are exploited to create "orphan experiences" for volunteers and tourists and to solicit donations from abroad. The article references the work of ChildSafe's "Children Are Not a Tourist Attraction" campaign to ensure that tourists travel ethically and responsibly in developing countries and do not contribute to the orphanage industry.
