This study sought to assess, analyse and inform the different forms of vulnerabilities affecting children and youth, and their effects and existing strategies and programmes addressing the challenges and vulnerabilities facing orphans, vulnerable children and youth (OVCY) in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region. The study also sought to propose recommendations for improvement, and development of minimum standards for OVCY and the finalisation of the SADC OVCY Strategic Framework.
This document begins by discussing the background for developing the psychosocial indicators that are used for measurement and the limitations of current indicators. The purpose was to create national level psychosocial indicators.
It goes on to provide an in depth review of the psychosocial impacts that HIV/AIDS have on children. Specifically it covers poverty, death, loss, grieving, stigma, discrimination, and increased risk of infection.

As the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to be experienced most severely in Southern Africa, 14% of children are now orphans and 48% of these children have been orphaned due to AIDS. REPSSI is supporting SADC to secure a consultant to provide short term technical assistance (TA) for the orphans, vulnerable children and youth programme.
