Abstract
This chapter aims to present and discuss the theoretical–methodological procedure of ecological engagement, used in a research with five adolescents in family reunification. Based on the Bioecological Theory of Human Development, the research has given an ecological perspective of the reunification phenomenon, considering it as proximal process. Thus, the authors discussed the particularities of the procedure for the planning of the research, the procedures, the role of the researcher and the participants, the engagement in the task, and for the analysis of data. Finally, it is…
Abstract— Foster care is a legally recognized family-community alternative in Portugal, designed to protect and care for children in situations where their rights are under attack. With the intent of expanding our knowledge of the Portuguese experience, through an intercultural dialogue between Brazil and Portugal, this article allows us to problematize what has happened with the process of family reintegration of those under care. To this end, we have used the content analysis methodology proposed by Bardin. It was possible to see that Portuguese foster care has been a residual protective…

There is extensive research demonstrating clearly the importance of a safe and caring family for child wellbeing and development. While there is consensus on the importance of effective care in families for children, there is a lack of discussion and agreement about the precise components of this care. In particular, further exploration is needed to determine which elements of effective care are universal and which are culturally or contextually specific, and to explore…

Abstract
Young children need nurturing care, which includes responsive caregiver–child interactions and opportunities to learn. However, there are few extant large‐scale programs that build parents’ abilities to provide this. We have developed an early childhood parenting training package, called Reach Up, with the aim of providing an evidence‐based, adaptable program that is feasible for low‐resource settings. Implementation of Reach Up was evaluated in Brazil and Zimbabwe to inform modifications needed and identify challenges that implementers and delivery agents encountered. Interview…
Abstract
Most research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has been conducted in high-income countries in the global North. The current longitudinal study examined the prevalence, overlap, and impact of ACEs in a sample of Brazilian children and adolescents who use city streets as spaces for socialization and survival (i.e., street-involved youth). Participants (N = 113; M age = 14.18 years) were recruited in three cities following standardized procedures. Most youth were male (80.5%) and non-White (91%). Lifetime exposure to ACEs was assessed at the first…
