Abstract
Despite the vast literature surrounding various aspects of left behind children (LBC)’s development in China, very few studies have examined the development of, and impact on their non-cognitive abilities as a result of parental migration. Using survey data consisting of 5002 eighth graders from 160 middle schools in northwestern China, this paper investigates how parental migration affects children’s non-cognitive abilities, as is measured by Big Five components of conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, and openness, as well as children’s grit. We narrow our…
Abstract
For decades, traditional correlation analysis and regression models have been used in social science research. However, the development of machine learning algorithms makes it possible to apply machine learning techniques for social science research and social issues, which may outperform standard regression methods in some cases. Under the circumstances, this article proposes a methodological workflow for data analysis by machine learning techniques that have the possibility to be widely applied in social issues.…
Abstract
Rapid industrialization and urbanization in China have resulted in labor migrants leaving children behind. For left-behind children (LBC), disrupted parental attachment may increase the risk of psychiatric morbidity in adulthood. To investigate psychopathological consequences for university students who were LBC and to estimate the effects of one or both parents being migrants, the duration of left-behind experience, and parental absence during critical periods of growth on psychiatric morbidity. We conducted an annual survey of all freshmen at a Chinese university from 2014 to…
Abstract
The present study aims to explore the associations between grandparenting styles and childhood depression, as well as the mediating role of childhood food insecurity on the focal associations among Chinese rural left-behind children. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 1,360 rural students (Grade 5-9, mean age = 13.16 years) who reported one or both parents had migrated into the urban sector and were mainly cared by grandparents. The participants responded to the questions on the short form of the Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran (s-EMBU, Swedish for “my memories of…
ABSTRACT
Although parent–child separation and environmental pressure cast numerous challenges to left-behind children, some of them still achieved positive development. This study employed a life-course perspective to reveal the dynamic developmental trajectories and concealed protective factors among college students with left-behind experience. A qualitative approach with in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect six participants’ life histories. Each participant’s life trajectories were delineated. Their life stories were coded thematically. The analyses of life…
This report from Amnesty International presents testimonies from six parents residing in Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey who have been separated from their children, who are "trapped" in China. Some of these children have been taken to state-run “orphan camps” or boarding schools.
Abstract
Background
China’s rapid economic development since the late 1970s has resulted in a large-scale migrant population from rural to urban areas, with millions of Chinese children being left behind at home by their parents who migrated to city for work.
Objective
The primary objective of this study is to test the effects of family, school and background characteristics on left-behind children’s (LBC) and non-left-behind children’s (NLBC) physical health, school performance, and delinquent behavior.
Participants
A total of 765 LBC and 468 NLBC in elementary and middle…
Abstract
This chapter compares and contrasts trends in international adoption in the two countries over a period of 27 years from 1992 to 2018. The data presented are based on statistics provided by 20+ receiving States. The period reviewed saw a sharp rise in the global number of intercountry adoptions from 14,000 in 1992 to 45,000 in 2005, followed by a steady decline over the next 14 years. During this period, China became the major source for international adoption, accounting for 152,000 of the 700,000 adoptions recorded in these years. In this chapter, changes in the…
Abstract
The problems of left-behind children in China have attracted widespread attention from researchers. However, previous empirical studies on left-behind children have mostly been based on small samples and small-scale surveys and have not covered all age groups. Whether left-behind children fared worse than their non-left-behind counterparts remains unknown. We conducted the first nationwide survey to examine whether left-behind children aged 0–6 years old have poor interactions with primary caregivers, and whether school-age children experience higher levels of victimization and…
Abstract
Objective
Left-behind children (LBC) are an at-risk population in China with emerging mental health needs. This study aimed to systematically review experimental studies of interventions that promote mental health wellbeing of LBC in mainland China.
Method
We reviewed both English and Chinese language studies published from 2000 to 2019 via a comprehensive search involving the databases PubMed and two database aggregators (ProQuest and EbscoHost) plus China National Knowledge Infrastructure. We retained empirical articles if they involved…
